A Prediction Market Trader Earned $436,000 on Bets Predicting Maduro's Downfall.

An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of the next day, indicating a sudden change in positions right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on recently seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
