The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
