Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
